Dental implants are the closest that modern dentistry has come to recreating the look, feel, and function of natural teeth. There are several advantages to undergoing the dental implants placement procedure offered at our Charlotte-area dental practice. When functioning properly, dental implants won’t shift, slip, or fallout. Unlike dental restoration techniques, which rely on partial filing of surrounding teeth, dental implants do not rely on surrounding teeth for support.
Dental implants employ a titanium root system that is anchored directly to the patient's jawbone. The insertion of this artificial tooth root is the first step in the dental implant placement process. The dentist will allow several months for the jaw bone tissue to heal and fuse with the titanium implant root before continuing the implant placement process. Once the artificial implant root is in place, a crown is attached to the titanium anchor. The crown is meticulously crafted to mimic the appearance of the patient's natural teeth. With proper attention to care of the surrounding gum tissue, a dental implant is one of the longest lasting dental restoration treatments available. Dental bridges, available at our Charlotte-area restorative dentistry practice, are a popular, cost-effective, and natural-looking treatment for tooth loss. Dental bridges are constructed out of tooth-colored porcelain and ceramic materials. The end result is an enhanced smile with a luster that matches a patient's natural tooth enamel. Dental bridges not only look beautiful, but can also improve the clarity of a patient's speech. Another advantage of dental bridges is that, unlike removable partial dentures, they are permanent. Once they are securely cemented to the prepared teeth on either side of the space, dental bridges provide a firm and stable bite.
Fixed bridges can replace one or more teeth. An adjacent tooth on each side of the missing tooth is prepared in the same manner as a tooth is prepared for a single crown. Impressions of the area are taken and used to fabricate a custom-made bridge to replace the missing tooth. While the bridge is being customized to meet the aesthetic and functional needs of the patient, a temporary bridge is placed with temporary cement for the patient's comfort. Once the final bridge is fabricated it is cemented in place with permanent cement. Like porcelain veneers and crowns, dental bridges are crafted to complement surrounding teeth according to the patient's specific smile and needs. At our restorative and general dentistry practice serving Matthews, Mint Hill, and Charlotte, our dentists make and restore full and partial dentures. Our experienced dentists – Drs. Earle Sullivan, John Burd, and Taso Roupas - place a strong emphasis not only on the functionality of a patient's dentures, but also on ensuring they can be worn comfortably. For patients suffering from complete or partial tooth loss, being fitted with finely crafted, custom-made dentures can significantly improve the person's quality of life. Dentures can restore the fun and ease of simple daily pleasures like talking, laughing, and enjoying food again. Dentures also have significant aesthetic benefits such as strengthening a patient's jaw line and, of course, restoring smile confidence. Patients do not have to wait until they have lost all of their natural teeth to get dentures. Any teeth that remain can help to secure the dentures in place. For more information on full and partial dentures or denture repair, please contact Mint Hill Dentistry to schedule an appointment.

Patients should undergo a complete dental exam and professional cleaning every six months. During a complete dental exam, the dentist will gently check the firmness of a patient's tooth enamel to ensure no decay is present. Our dentists use a fluoride treatment or sealant to prevent dental cavities before they begin. The dentist will also test for pockets of space between the teeth and the gums which can indicate the earliest stages of gum disease. During a dental exam, one of our dentists will also take note of the condition of any dental implants, dental bridges, and other dental restorations. Our Charlotte and Mathews-area restorative dentists have the expertise to repair or replace any dental appliances that have been damaged.
During a dental cleaning one of our dental hygienists will use instruments designed to remove plaque from the spaces between the teeth and around the gum line. Even patients who are meticulous about daily brushing and flossing are often pleased by the smooth, pristine appearance of their teeth after a professional cleaning at the dentist's office.

Periodontal care is treatment of the structures that surround the teeth – mainly the gums and the ligaments that connect the tooth root to the jaw. When periodontal care is neglected there is a risk that tooth loss will occur, even in a tooth that has suffered no decay. The general dentistry professionals at our Matthews, Mint Hill, and Charlotte-area practice pay careful attention to each patient's periodontal health.
Plaque can pose a significant threat to a patient's oral health. Plaque contains bacteria that cause gingivitis, a chronic gum inflammation. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress into periodontitis, a serious gum disease characterized by gum recession and jaw bone loss. Recently, studies have also linked periodontal disease to serious health threats, including heart disease. Flossing and regular in-office cleanings are a patient's first line of defense against gum disease and tooth loss. If gum disease is already present Mint Hill Dentistry offers patients a variety of treatment options, including localized antibiotic treatment, scaling, and root planing.

Endodontic therapy is a method of treating the inner chamber of a tooth after it has suffered infection. The inner part of a tooth, called the pulp, may suffer infection as a result of gradual decay or sudden trauma. Some of the symptoms of dental pulp infection include tooth ache, extreme tooth sensitivity to hot or cold, and swelling. Patients experiencing any of these symptoms should contact Mint Hill Dentistry as soon as possible. When a tooth has been damaged or is suffering from an infection, endodontic therapy can mean the difference between losing the tooth and saving it.
During endodontic therapy the dentist removes all the tooth tissue in which harmful bacteria are present. There is little or no discomfort associated with the endodontic therapy procedure. The dentist will administer local anesthesia to ensure that patient comfort is maximized during the course of treatment. Depending upon the amount of tissue that was removed during the procedure, the dentist will restore beauty and functionality to the tooth by placing a CEREC® crown or onlay.

TMJ syndrome, also known as TMD, refers to the pain and discomfort of the face, jaw, and neck originating from a problem with the temporomandibular joint, the joint responsible for controlling the jaw. People with TMJ syndrome may have difficulty opening their jaw, experience locking of their jaw, or notice a distinctive popping noise during jaw motion. For a person suffering from TMJ syndrome, activities that most of us take for granted, like chewing and talking, can become extremely difficult and painful.
At Mint Hill Dentistry we provide treatment for TMJ disorder by helping our patients manage the cause of their TMJ symptoms. Frequently, the underlying source of jaw joint strain is poor occlusion. Occlusion is the way the teeth on the upper jaw fit together with the teeth on the lower jaw. TMJ syndrome is also frequently the end result of a lifelong habit of teeth grinding and teeth clenching. Treatment of TMJ syndrome may involve a combination of therapeutic and restorative dentistry techniques. For a TMJ health evaluation and information about TMJ treatment options offered at our general dentistry practice serving Matthews, Charlotte, and surrounding areas, contact Mint Hill Dentistry today!
