Same-Day Crown with IV Sedation

Same-Day Crown with IV Sedation

You may have heard us talk about our ability to have a crown done in a day before and you may have seen this photo on our Facebook page! Today we’ll take an in-depth look at how one of our dentists at Mint Hill Dentistry used IV sedation, along with our CEREC digital technology to scan, design, and mill this patient’s crown all in one visit, while they took a “nap”!!

This person broke their upper right premolar tooth by fracturing off an entire cusp (the tip end). For this particular individual – the sights, sounds, smells, and even the thought of having a crown (cap) done was terrifying. Thankfully with IV sedation it allows for people to have dentistry done in a comfortable environment.

Before (Broken Tooth)

You can see that one of the main cusps of this tooth is fractured off down to the gumline (blue arrow). Much of the remaining portion of the tooth is actually a large bonded filling (red arrow). What this means is there is minimal remaining tooth structure left, so a crown (or cap) is the best way to restore this tooth.

Digital Design Using In-house CEREC

The tooth is prepared for the crown by the dentist and then it is scanned using an intra-oral scanner. Next the crown is digitally designed by the dentist, and finally the crown is milled in a milling machine.

The crown restores the tooth back to normal. This was all completed in ONE visit, with NO impression and NO temporary crown. In addition, thanks to the IV sedation, this person was able to receive their dental work without having to worry about being afraid.
